Blue, Blue, My World is Becoming More Blue!

I have been a non-lover of blue for a long time now…but my taste has been slowly changing. I guess that happens to everyone.  Has this happened to you?

a serene bedroom in Woodlawn blue

Back in 2007, my husband was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer and while he was in the hospital I made a huge change in our Master bedroom, knowing that he would be recuperating for quite awhile. I wanted the room to be as serene and healing as possible.  Blue was the answer. It’s such a restful and peaceful color – perfect for someone who needs some calmness!

Sometimes he gets breakfast in bed…

We had had one wall papered in a pleasant but dated cream and blue floral pattern…so that was the first to go. I painted the room a soft version of Benjamin Moore’s Woodlawn Blue (I added a little extra white, a touch of blue green and probably a little extra this and that – I can never leave a paint color alone).

I took up the old wall to wall carpet and laid down some hardwood flooring. A recent addition to the room was a beautiful patterned wool carpet from Barclay Butera.

This room has always been tough to photograph – it tends to be dark all the time.  I have to really read my camera manual for all the tricks I need to do to get the lighting right.  But you will get the idea of the room.

My current novel, some mementos from our honeymoon, some pics of the kids and Montauk daisies are some of my favorite items on my nightstand.

I am lucky to have my parent’s bedroom furniture.  There will be no painting of this! The wood grain and the inlaid design is so gorgeous.

I have a few more things to do in the room before I will be happy with it…like some crown moldings, window treatments and a chandelier! But, I have to say that the change was welcomed by my husband and he is a happy and healthy man today.  Was it all because of blue? Maybe!!!

  1. Well, aren’t you a talented decorator!!! I also, have found that as I’ve gotten older I am enjoying the color blue. It seems peaceful and so many kinds of woods go well with it. That furniture of your parents is a gift of beauty. And I LOVE the rug. We’ve got several Dash & Albert rugs, and 2 orientals that were ‘willed’ to us. You’ve inspired me to take more photo’s and share more of our interior. BTW- have you visited my two friends Sue @Housekaboodle and Sarah @HouseCrazySarah. You’d LOVE THEM! I’m bookmarking you for daily visits1 SCORE!

Hi Cheryl…so glad that we have connected. Yes – you should take more photos of your house and show them on your blog. I would love to see more…especially the rooms that have those gorgeous rugs you were willed. My mom was the only person in my family with any kind if interior decorating savvy, so when I was a teenager I made her promise to will me her bedroom set.

I may do a Dahlia blogpost (did a few already – my favorite flower). Send me pics of your dahlias…so cool that you are developing new beauties!

I was so happy to read your blog this morning. Nice to know that your own feelings are being felt by others. I will check out those other blogs. I will bookmark you as well. Are you on Facebook? I have a Facebook Page and a personal page. Hopefully we will connect there as well.

      Thanks for commenting!

Blue – I like blue and white and blue and anything, yet, I too have not used it to decorate – ever. I agree to not paint the dresser you inherited. Love, love your blog name…The Colorful Bee!

Hey Sue…thanks for commenting. Yes, I think that blue and white and blue and yellow…blue with orange – I love so many combinations with blue. So funny that I really didn’t (like you!) use it in my home until my husband became ill.

So – try it in one room, at least. It will give you a welcome change!

So glad we are blog friends!
