Reviving Brown Cabinetry with Paint

painted white laundry room cabinets

A Beautiful White Laundry Room…goes from Dark Brown to White   I recently helped a client revamp her Laundry Room. Her dark brown cabinets were getting her down and she needed a change. White cabinetry was the answer – Annie Sloan Pure White Chalk Paint was the tool. It’s so important to make our more utilitarian spaces look beautiful and fun to be in. Most of us forget that (me included). When a room we … Continue reading

Painting and Decorating Architectural Fragments

adding verdi gris coloring to a decorative wooden piece

I was coming back from a decorative painting job out in the Hamptons and I came across this wonderful old antique shop named Lloyds in Eastport, New York. I had passed this store many times before and finally – I had a little bit of time to go in and take a look. The store is a lot larger than it appears from the outside – and there are two large floors full of antiques. … Continue reading

Help! I’m Having a Problem Picking Paint Colors

What’s Involved in a Paint Color Consultation?   I have received a few questions about how I go about doing a color consultation for my clients. Instead of answering separately, I thought it best to do a blogpost about it…so here goes!   Source Q: I am having trouble picking some colors for the first floor of my home. Can you tell me how I should prepare for a color consult with you and … Continue reading

Why a New Ring Setting is Like Interior Design

A New Engagement Ring Setting is Like Interior Decorating? Yes! A week before Christmas, I received an early present from my husband – a new setting for my engagement ring. I wanted this for such a long time but I always felt that it might be too expensive and that I should be happy with the actual ring that my husband gave me. It’s the memory thing, you know.  I wanted to preserve the beautiful memory … Continue reading

Embossed Plaster Art for a Home Staging Project

metallic plaster art with overlay glaze

For a home staging assignment two weeks ago, I had to create some artwork for the property. Yes – I could have used some that I had on hand…but nothing was quite right.  The investors wanted the home to be a bit more contemporary than what I usually do – and I didn’t have anything that would work in a contemporary setting, artwork-wise. So, I decided to create my own. I did several pieces for … Continue reading

A Successful Home Staging Project

staged master bath in a 3.5 million home

Something I don’t talk about quite so often on the blog is some of my Home Staging work.  I thought I’d show you a project I did a little while back that was very successful.  It was a $3.5 million house that was sold in 3 weeks.  The property sat for nearly 2 years vacant and unsold until I put some furnishings in it.  Some of these items were painted by myself and my crew…and … Continue reading

My Interview with Artist, Mary Hong

glass art by Mary Hong

I follow a fellow designer, Cara McBroom, and was really taken by two art pieces in one of her client’s homes.  It was by Mary Hong, an artist working in Florida.  I had to contact her and found we had a lot in common – she appreciates the experimentation that faux finishers are fond of and she’ll be traveling to the same region of France that I visited back in 2001.  Mary, though, will be … Continue reading

Decorating the Porch for Fall with an Outdoor Rustic Sign

happy autum sign on front porch

So, I came across a wonderful, rustic Welcome sign made by Shayna of The Woodgrain Cottage – such a nice touch to her absolutely beautiful fall porch. I am in the midst of decorating my front porch and felt that something like that sign would be a great addition.  My husband had an old wooden board taking up space in our shed, sooo… I felt it could have been a little taller…but for now…it was perfect.

Chinese Lantern Pods: An Old Favorite Re-Discovered

blue teapot and orange Chinese lantern pods

I love Chinese lanterns! These colorful beauties are a natural for fall décor. They can be dried and used in wreaths and floral arrangements around the home. One of my clients, Dottie, gave me a beautiful bunch of these plants last week. As soon as I saw them I was transported back to my childhood.

The Custom Blue Chalk Painted and Stenciled Coffee Table

closeup of design on custom blue coffee table with stencil design and chalk paint

I finally finished a coffee table I had been working on for a while. I didn’t want to post it until I figured out how to tame the super shine I was getting from the wax I put on the table.  I figured it out soon enough…made the necessary adjustments (not hard – a little more sanding back) and it’s a beautiful finished table.
