Fast and Beautiful DIY Finishes for Accessories in Your Home: Part 1

a candleholder and frame revamped with Annie Sloan Chalk Painr

If there’s one thing that I do when I only have a little bit of time, it’s revamping an existing accessory in my home.  I’ve done it for photo shoots, gifts, home staging…or “just because,” I can always squeeze in a few moments to add beauty to an existing ugly or forgotten item!   You can read how I did this miniature Mora clock transformation here.

Napoleonic Blue and Old White Chalk Painted Demilune with Stencil

closeup of Chez Sheil stencil on half moon table painted with Annie Sloan Chalk Paints

Here’s a great little $5 demilune table that I found on Craigslist. The owner said to me “It’s only half a table and that’s why it’s $5.”I said “No problem – I’ll be right over!” I guess she didn’t know what a “demilune” was. I added some Annie Sloan Chalk Paint and a Royal Design Studio stencil – and changed the look completely. The “before pic” shows what a sorry but very serviceable piece it … Continue reading

A Hand Painted Miniature Swedish Mora Clock

Last summer, a friend of mine – Anthony {who is related by marriage} suggested to me that my reproduction Mora clock in the entry would look great if it was painted red.  I would have never considered that color in a million years – I have zero red accents in my house.  I love the color – but it never happened in my decor.  Now, Anthony is not just a casual observer who puts in … Continue reading

Valentine’s Day Mantle

I love Valentine’s Day – perhaps as much as Christmas and my birthday. So decorating for this holiday is such a joy.  Even though this year’s Valentine’s will be a bit different – I will be going in for some eye surgery and I’ll be a bit blurry and bloodshot and seeing double – I will still have a great time.  Good thing I love my husband because I’ll be seeing two of him! I … Continue reading

Making a Real Estate Office “Pretty”: Part 1

A very good friend of mine, Dianne Scalza, just opened up a new real estate franchise – Exit Realty All Pro in Bay Shore NY.  Dianne is a colorful, dynamic and fearless woman and so when I saw her private office – all beige – I knew I had to feminize it and bring more color and “Dianne” into the space. Luckily, she asked me to help make it her own. …And we just had … Continue reading

A Fall Mantle: Decorated in Silver, Gold, Pale Blue and Off White

I wanted to do something a little different than I normally would do, decorating-wise.  In my great room, I usually use rich, saturated colors but I wanted to try a color scheme I never use – blue, silver and gold.  I came across a beautiful lantern in HomeGoods – and that started the whole thing! {I apologize in advance for the dark pics.  We have no electricity and my great room doesn’t get an inordinate … Continue reading

Revamping an Old Chair for a New Purpose

a rocking chair finished with Annie Sloan Chalk Paint

This week I was asked to stage a vacant home in Malverne NY.  It’s a lovely Dutch Colonial that has a great, homey feel to it.  When I looked at the home for the first time, I jotted down my ideas for which furnishings to bring to make this house feel even more like a home.  I usually know pretty quickly – but I knew that I might be missing one or two things that … Continue reading

Mood Boards and How They Help You Learn Your Style and Your Loves in Life

mood board for decorating a room

This is a mood board that I made to help me figure out some of my passions in life… & some topics that I’d like to cover on this blog.  I made a list of my top 10 passions… 1) Love is number one – hence the heart and the word “love” on the small tin cover that I’ve had for many years that my husband gave me. 2) I love beautiful and colorful fabrics, … Continue reading

Annie Sloan’s Chalk Paint

I just started playing with this paint from England – and I think it’s really terrific. I have to do a few more pieces (thinking of re-doing my entire dining room furniture – every bit of it!). But to start with – I just did two small entry tables and a mirror (actually – it’s a frame that will become a mirror!). This is one table with a faded brocade stencil on top. Here’s what … Continue reading
