Today I am Loving…
I have had a long week of work (and a pretty dull, non-inspiring type of project) – so for today’s blogpost I needed some beautiful inspiration shots. I hope you love these as much as I do…
Whistle While You Work: These two office pictures make me smile.
Who wouldn’t be inspired in this space? Designed by Erinn Valencich
If winter comes, can spring be far behind?: An outdoor room styled by Lucinda Moodie. With the cold weather upon us, we need these warm reminders.
What do you look at first? The black enameled, art deco door, the silver-leafed ceiling,
the dining room furniture, the beautiful round table and light blue and white chairs…the chandelier? By architect Peter Pennoyer

The Hidden Door: So beautiful and practical – why waste precious wall space! Add a bookcase to your door. Peter Pennoyer

Geometric Love at First Sight: This is definitely a “where do you look first” image. Notice the circles, ovals and rectangles in repetition. This room really has a rhythm going. I couldn’t live with this on a daily basis – but I love that ceiling and the mirror treatments on the walls. From a past Pasadena Designer Showhouse by Linda Allen Designs
Total Serenity: You could easily wind down from a hectic day in this space. Just add some chamomile tea. From Kips Bay Showhouse 2011, Elizabeth Pyne, McMillen Plus
Big Blue: Who wouldn’t have fun sitting at this desk. UK Designer Abigail Ahearn’s
turquoise desk makes a big splash in this room. Her office is a constant reminder
to have fun and be creative. Via The Selby
More Mora for Me: Look at the fabulous patina on this Swedish Mora clock. And the finish on the chair is fabulous too. I’ll be doing a tutorial soon on how to achieve this look.
Love Mora Clocks. The antique turquoise finish on the clock is very unusual – just love it. Wallpaper and fabric from Thibault

Great Gift Ideas from a Fabulous Store – Henry Road
I wish I could just hop on a plane to Los Angeles to be in the company of Paula Smail, the owner of Henry Road in Studio City in California. She descibes herself as a “Shopkeeper, Designer, Daydreamer” and she has dreamed up a great store – chock full of great items and gifts. Oh well – a trip is not possible…but she has an online store that is so inventive and inspiring that it’s easy to be a very clever gift-giver this holiday season.
A view of the store, via Henry Road
She also has a online magazine that is full of great accessorizing ideas, interviews with artists and much more. Just looking at the images in this magazine will give you great tips on how to arrange your art objects, books and accessories. On the website, you’ll also find a link to her fabulous blog – well worth the look.
I have pulled together a “Top 10 Gifts” from the catalogue – but please go take a peek at all of the offerings because I know that you will find some great ideas for even the pickiest people on your gift list! We all have a few of those, don’t we!?! And with everyone tightening their belts these days – each one of these gifts is easy on the wallet.
It was hard to pick only 10, believe me – but I’ve heard that blog readers love short lists – so here it goes!
For Kids…Or Kids at Heart!
Number 1
The Scratch Off Map: This is based on the “scratch off ticket” idea – but here you scratch off where you’ve been in the world. Great for kids as well as grownups. Perfect for the world traveller or someone planning to do some travelling. Cost: $20
Number 2
Classic Baby Blocks: Made in the USA and toxic free, these blocks will also help a little one learn math. I could have used these as a kid…I can spell but don’t ask me a math question. Cost: $40 for a set of embossed blocks with canvas bag.
Number 3
Dog Balloon Bookends: These come in orange and purple and I think they are great accessories for a kid’s room. Colorful and useful, they may help get your kids to read more. Cost: $40
For the Guys…
Number 4
Billiard Ball Bottle Stoppers: I love these for a bar or…well why not – a pool room! My husband always hates to use the girly ones that I have – so I know that he would appreciate these instead. Cost: $30
Number 5
Vintage Gas Station Numbers: For the guys on your list – but also for anyone who wants to add a little vintage vibe in a family room, kitchen – even the mantle. Cost: $35
For Her…
Number 6
Queen of Everything Mug: Show her how you really feel with this adorable mug. For $15, it’s a bargain way to make her smile!
Number 7
A Pretty Pouf: Then give her something to rest her Queenly feet on! It’s colorful – and a great spot of color for just about any room. Cost: $220
Number 8
Spread the Love Butter Knives: Keep the love going with this thoughtful gift. Great for “her” and for anyone who wants to add a little loving touch to the dinner table. Cost: $16
Number 9
Decorative Hand Cream: What woman wouldn’t mind keeping one of these gorgeous little tubes in her purse? They are pretty enough to keep out on the bath or kitchen counter. Cost: $18
Number 10
Decorate by Holly Becker: This book, by Holly Becker who started the design blog, Decor8, is a must have book for anyone who loves to decorate their home. There are so many photographs with great ideas that you can implement right away. I just took a blogging course taught by Holly – and I can say without hesitation – that she is one of the most creative people and the book is so inspirational. Cost: $35. The store has a great collection of other books that would be great for gift giving.
OK – Number 10.5
I just had to include these decorative pillars for $25 each. I am going to buy at least one – the Thistle – for my husband who loves that plant. I think in the US it’s sometimes a weed…but over in Europe it’s seen in gardens. My husband and I picked a thistle pod in one of the gardens near the Eiffel tower and we’ve loved the thistle ever since.
So spread a little cheer – for not too much money. Let me know if you’ve found some great finds and fabulous sites for gift ideas. I would love to hear about them!

Using Birch Bark for an Eco Friendly Way to Add Texture to Your Home
“…So was I once myself a swinger of birches.
And so I dream of going back to be.
It’s when I’m weary of considerations,
And life is too much like a pathless wood.”
I love birch trees. The texture, the vulnerability, the purity…maybe how they remind me of my childhood, as in the except from the poem “Birches” by Robert Frost, above. Once, while living in Kirkland WA, I told a friend that the one thing I missed since moving from NY to Washington State was Birch trees. She told me that WA had birch trees – “just open your eyes!” And – they did have birch trees. It took my taking up jogging to finally see them.
So, in honor of birches – a blog post! You can bring the textural beauty of birches into your home easily and affordably. And, of course – expensively, if you are so inclined! I put together some great choices and sources for you to use throughout your home…throughout the year.
These birch candles from Cost Plus are very affordable (way less than the ones I’ve seen in Pottery Barn). They would look great adorning a fireplace mantle or on the hearth or grouped together in varying sizes on a coffee table. Add some twine or raffia around them for an extra decorative touch.
You can also make your own birch bark candles by purchasing birch bark sheets. I’ve found them on EBay and other sites. Just cut them and hot glue them to inexpensive pillars that you can find at discount shops like HomeGoods, Michael’s and Target.
You can add a stack of these birch logs by your fireplace to add texture to your room.
You can find these birch logs, plus birch twigs and sheets at The Birch Bark Store.
Why not make some birch bark ornaments, like these from designer Nan Sloan via HGTV?
On the other end of the birch bark spectrum, expense-wise, is furniture featuring this humble material. Above, a company called Maryland Court is making some beautiful pieces that rustic and elegant at the same time.
This more contemporary piece comes from Woodland Furniture. This company is very well-known for their attention to detail and quality. It’s a “to-the-trade” company, so you do have to go through a designer to access their line.
Artwork can bring in the textural quality of birches while adding color as well. The Russian artist, Maya Eventov, uses birches as inspiration for her paintings time and again.
So, bring nature in with the beauty of birches. Maybe you will become a “swinger of birches” too.

Carolyn Quartermaine’s Fabric Collection and How to Get These Looks for Less
“Color is fundamental, it’s beautiful.
It enriches our lives.” – Carolyn Quartermaine
I have been head-over-heels in love with French Script fabrics for ages – ever since I saw this type of fabric on a French chair in a design magazine many years ago. It was Carolyn Quartermaine’s fabric – love at first sight. It’s not just the French aspect – it’s her use of color and pattern with the script that is so engaging. Her clear, beautiful hues make whatever they are covering the star of the room. The script also lends a textural quality to the fabrics.
I was probably drawn to her fabrics because I see “artist” written all over her work (pardon the pun). In fact, she is an artist and she started out using 17th century French calligraphy, that she found and was attracted to, in her artwork that she exhibited in galleries. You can read a great interview with her on Haute Home
Above you’ll see her “Flowers” collection. It’s feminine, colorful and romantic – it makes me want to start on my Master Bedroom right away. We can all use a little extra romance in our lives, right?
How can you bring this feeling into your home – without the large pricetag?
While there’s nothing like the real thing, you can bring the feeling of her fabrics into your home without spending an arm and a leg. I’ve purchased several pillows and chairs with some lovely French Script fabric at HomeGoods and other discount stores. So, be on the lookout. You can score some beautiful finds without breaking the bank.
I used these French Script chairs I found in Home Goods recently in a home in Belle Terre NY
I’ve seen some great pillows with French Script in the Ballard catalogue – and they also sell the fabric there as well. It’s a bit pricey – but I did find a less expensive version (I think it’s $19.98 per yard) at Lewis & Sheron fabrics. A big Thank You to Joni Webb of Cote de Texas for introducing me to this store.
Source
Put this beautiful, but more budget-friendly fabric, on a painted chair or splash it on your dining room table – with a vase of red roses, antique candlesticks and set the table with gold chargers and colorful dinnerware – and you’ll have the recipe for a colorful room…for less.
Let me know if you have used any French Script fabrics in your home. Would love to see your photos. If you would like some help in getting this look, call me at 631 793-1315.
Live your best “Colorful Life!”

This was My Weekend in Snowy Westchester!
While most of Long Island just got some wet snow, Westchester County – where we were all weekend minding our grandson Sean – got 7 inches of wet, heavy snow. Trees and branches were falling all around. You’d hear these huge cracks and then “thud” and you knew that something landed on the ground (and hopefully not on the roof or on a car).
My husband Richard and I drove back to Long Island on Sunday morning and we were very happy not to see this kind of snowfall on our driveway. The snowy weather was fun for a weekend when we had no place to go. Glad to leave it though. Not looking forward to a storm like this – but we all know it will happen in the next few months.
I hope all my friends and relatives in CT, NJ and PA fared well during the storm.

Updating Your Home Using Color and Creativity
I recently did some decorative work in a lovely condo in Woodbury, NY. Working with designer, Teresa Simone, we created some beautiful rooms in soothing palettes of blues and and greens…and blue-greens. The formerly all white guest bath was done with a custom-colored blue-green metallic plaster that lends a wonderfully restful quality to the room. Teresa had located an antique mirror on one of her shopping trips – and placed it on the large, frameless mirror (that shows its 80s origin!). This is a great way to soften and feminize a bathroom without having to rip the entire mirror down.
The homeowner found the silhouettes – left by the previous owner – and these look great against the soft blue-green plaster…and they add to the “been there forever” feeling in the room.

The Designer Showhouse in Centerport NY
A Beautiful Designer Showhouse in Centerport NY
We just completed some beautiful finishes for the Normandy Mansion Designer Showhouse which will be at a gorgeous home across the street from the Vanderbilt Museum in Centerport NY
We did a beautiful light teal strie on the living room walls for designer Beth Foley of West Hempstead NY. Her living room is classic and traditional – but with a modern twist. The art she used for the room was very modern and colorful. Our background supports her colors and themes – because it’s timeless and classic and doesn’t overpower the room.
Close up of our wall finish – with some of the paintings installed
Beth hadn’t finished the room yet, but this painting gives you a glimpse of the colors she used in her space while giving the room a modern touch
Not quite finished with the arrangement, but adding black to the room lends wonderful contrast
Our wall finish lends a soft backdrop to her room. If we had been bolder with the finish, the room would not have worked at all. This room has such a peaceful quality to it – but the modern paintings give it that punch of color.
We also did the stairway going up to the second floor. Again, we did a subtle colorwashed finish that anyone could afford to have done in their home. It’s simple – yet so beautiful. We added a little “Hello” as you enter the stairway…a beautiful scroll and some French wording from a famous poem “Le Printemps.” It’s understated – but very memorable. Faux finishing used to be loud and all about the tool that you used – but today’s professional finishes and subtle and lovely and they add beauty without “being in your face.”
Here you see the two finishes together. The transition from strie to a soft colorwash…is seamless
I did the finishes with Marty Wisehahn of Classic Faux Studios. I hope that some of you will come to the Showhouse. It’s worth the trip.
Here are the dates, times and address of the Showhouse…

From Plain to Beautiful
Refinishing and Revamping Plain Furniture
If there’s one thing that I totally love, it’s creating something out of nothing. Whenever I get a chance to revamp something – whether it be walls, furniture, ceilings, floors etc – it’s the creative challenge that leads me to the answer of what something wants to be.
In my kitchen, I knew that I wanted something beautiful for my island. I didn’t want an island like everyone else – I wanted it to be French, antique and unusual. I did a beautiful pale metallic and antiqued finish on the demilune that’s attached to my island. I also had some inspirational photographs and some napkins with “Chinoiserie” artwork and this is this is what I came up with.
Our kitchen was featured in HOUZZ!
Here is a side view…
It’s exactly what I wanted – with my own personal stamp on it. I’m happy every day when I look at it – even though the demilune only houses very mundane things like dog food and extra vases and large pots that we don’t use very often – it’s functional and beautiful and I love it!!
If you would love to have a kitchen that looks like mine, please call me at 631 793-1315 – I would be very glad to help you! Linda
I am linking this up to…
